PTA Meeting Minutes, 10/21/2020

PTA MEETING : October 21st,  2020 6:00 PM

Meeting Called to Order at 6:30 PM by PTA  Vice President Alina Salta

This meeting is a combination Title I PAC meeting and PTA meeting

Welcome all parents and teachers to Title I and PTA Zoom meeting

All members were confirmed to be voting members via registration numbers which were assigned previously.

Principal’s Report with Mr. Aggoub

 Health And Safety Daily Student Health Screenings- Most prefer to complete online on phone.

Disinfecting- Custodians have enough supplies to clean in the evening.

BRT Fire and Lockdown Drills- Two completed so far.

COVID-19 Mandatory Testing- PS 97 is currently in a yellow zone. Random testing started today.

Technology Improvements- The DOE has provided an additional 47 iPads, they will be distributed to students this week.  

 Chromebooks- PS 97 Received additional technology funding and purchased 80 Chromebooks. They are delayed due to current high-demand.

New Improved PS 97 Website- New eChalk website. Mrs. Joseph and Ms. Stuart have attended trainings to run the website.

Teaching and Learning- Instructional Leadership Team has been determining the instructional focus of the year. Instruction is still a focus! They meet bi-weekly. Instructional focus: Instructional  Absolutes and Professional Development.

Events- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Wear pink on October 22nd and 23rd.

Book Character Day Dress as a character on October 29th and 30th. No masks or weapons allowed.

Picture Day- November 19th, 20th and 21st.

Title I Parent Meeting: Mr. Aggoub discussed the history and purpose of Title I federal funding to the school. The total received by PS 97 is $347,921. One percent is reserved to help parents and families and the spending is determined by the PAC. This amount is $3,757.

Elections for PAC- Parent Advisory Council

 All candidates nominated themselves for the following PAC positions.  After asking three times, for each position, if there were additional nominations from the floor, the candidates took the position as there was no opposition.

Elections for PTA

 Ms. Kendra Kuszai began the election with asking for nominations from the floor for President.  Alina Salta Matei nominated herself.  After asking if there were any additional nominations from the floor three times, the PTA secretary cast one unanimous vote for Alina Salta Matei for the position of President.

Elections for SLT

 Ms. Alina Salta Matei continued with the election to fill two SLT parent vacancies.

She asked for nominations from the floor and Ziara Mosquea nominated herself and since no one else responded, Isabel Vargas nominated herself.  After asking three times if there were additional nominations from the floor, the two candidates were awarded SLT member positions as there was no opposition.

 Picture Day New Picture Day company this year, Irvin Simon. Everything will be touchless. November 19th, 20th and 21st. It will be a socially-distanced outside picture day, also on Saturday for the remote students. The company is giving us a reduced $2.95 shipping charge.

Spring Photos Parents still asking about pictures, distribution efforts already occurred and all remaining photos will be available at the November 21st Picture Day date.

Holiday Boutique We will be working with Miss Chocolate for the holiday kids boutique as usual, but it will be all online this year. It will run from November 25th to December 7th.

Motion to Purchase Visitor Labels for the school for $212.91

Principal’s Report with Mr. Aggoub

School Building Closure Mayor and Chancellor decided school buildings are closed because of the 3% positivity rate. All students will learn remotely. Chancellor sent a letter and staff have been informed.

Lunch and Breakfast are still available from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM and for the community from 3:00-5:00 PM. Kitchen staff and custodians still reporting to the building.

Closure is temporary, will share updates.

Disinfecting- Custodians doing a phenomenal job throughout the day and in the evening.

Attendance is still important while switching to remote sessions. Attendance team in the building is conducting outreach to those with a pattern of attendance.

Technology – Devices The school has received DOE iPads. Also 18 new iPads to place with families that were previously ordered by Ms. Custodio. Working to fulfil family requests for devices.

PS 97 Received additional technology funding and purchased 80 Chromebooks. They are delayed due to current high-demand.

New Improved PS 97 Website- New eChalk website is up. Mrs. Joseph and Ms. Stuart have attended trainings to run the website. Parents can connect devices to the website to receive updates.

Teaching and Learning- Students will learn consistently while switching between blended and remote.

District Visit Jennifer Carreón-Ambert visited virtually and was happy with what she saw and made some suggestions for improvement.

Events-

Picture Day- Is being held remotely.

Turkey Trot- Will have the event even if virtual.

Parent Workshops We encourage parents to attend.

 Welcomed back to the building this week after school closure.

 Health and Safety

Health Screenings are completed daily online.

Covid Testing Forms Mandatory for grades 1-5. Thank you to parents for completing it, 99% parents have completed.

Weekly Covid Testing 20% of blended students are tested each week.

Disinfecting Custodians follow strict cleaning protocols throughout the day and deep cleaning at night.

 

Attendance is very important, for in-person and remote. Assignments must be completed at minimum.

Technology – Devices The school has received a large shipment of iPads. 100 parents requested.

Teaching and Learning Instructional leadership team and teacher teams meet bi-weekly.

Visitations by administrators to observe and support teaching practices.

Parent Workshops Attendance with Ms. James, Remote Learning with Ms. Vasu, Stress Management with Empire Health, Holiday Winter Craft with Ms. Dee Dee.

 Teachers Report- Ms. Delvalle

Pre-K- Currently exploring water and its properties. Match numbers 11-20 and some simple addition. Parents can help by reading, practice writing their name, the alphabet and ask them what they learned.

Kindergarten- Currently practicing reading and sequencing. Students are working on numbers 11-20. Parents can help by practicing sight words and listening to the sounds of words while reading. Praise students and give them confidence.

Grade 1- Students are working on nonfiction texts, measuring objects and telling time. Parents can help by practicing time, comparing items and having your child tell you what they know.

Grade 2- Students are currently learning suffixes, character traits and realistic fiction narratives. In math, they are working on 2 and 3 digit addition and subtractions. Also seasons, weather and matter.

Grade 3- Students are making inferences about character traits and motivation, and learning fractions. Parents can help by reading books, talking about characters and asking their child to use evidence to support ideas. Talk about fractions while cooking or eating.

Grade 4- Students are working on story elements, character analysis and theme and writing literacy essays. In math they are working on factors, multiples and patterns. Parents can help by looking at the Google Classrooms regularly to make sure students are completing assignments and keep up to date. Ask your child what they are learning.

Grade 5- Students are working on “Stars Beneath our Feet,” “Amina’s Voice,” fractions, water systems and sustainability. Also Colonization and the American Revolution. Virtual graduation activities have begun and they are getting the yearbook ready.

Health and Safety
Daily Health Screenings are completed daily for every person in the building, recommended to be done online.
Covid Testing Consent Forms Mandatory for grades 1-5. 100% parents have completed.
Mandatory Weekly Covid Testing 20% of students and staff are tested each week.
Five Days per Week In-Person Learning and DOE change in Social Distancing Policy Students in the classroom must now be 3 feet apart rather than 6. 6 feet remains for staff and eating. 40 remote students changed to in-person. Some will have a different teacher. Start date April 26th.
New York State Exams ELA and Math Parents must opt-in, deadline April 15th. Results will not be used for grades/promotions/evaluation. They will be multiple choice only. April 20-22nd.
Attendance Important to attend daily. Attendance is tracked and reaching out to families.

Teachers Report- Ms. Mullins

Pre-K- Currently exploring plants. Math- sorting counting and counting 1-20. Social and Emotional growth- The students will learn to work as a team making musical instruments, calming down with yoga and to work in a small group on a scavenger hunt.
Kindergarten- The focus for reading is inside and outside character traits. They are practicing
narrative writing, using three finders to tell the beginning, middle and end of a story. In math they are
leaning about two-dimensional shapes. Parents can help by practicing sight words, and listening to
the sounds of words while reading, and going on Raz Kids. Praise students and give them
confidence.
Grade 1- Students are working on realistic fiction, reading and creating their own realistic stories. In
math they are working on two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Parents can help by
discussing stories that they read every night, practice looking for shapes in everyday life and talk
about shapes.
Grade 2- Students are currently working on vowel teams, r-controlled words and comprehension
strategies. The are writing realistic fiction and narratives. In math, they are working on money and
time.
Grade 3- Students are making inferences about character traits and motivation. In math, they are
learning fractions, rounding, estimating and addition and subtraction up to 1000. Parents can help by
reading books, talking about characters and asking their child to use evidence to support ideas. Talk
about fractions while cooking or eating.
Grade 4- Students are reading Esperanza Rising, working on story elements, character relationships
and working on vocabulary. In writing, they are starting a unit on informational writing and writing
about their culture and background. In math they are working on fractions. Parents can help by
looking at the Google Classrooms regularly to make sure students are completing assignments and
keep up to date. Ask your child how they are feeling.
Grade 5- Students are working on “Stars Beneath our Feet,” “Amina’s Voice,” fractions, water
systems and sustainability. Also Colonization and the American Revolution. Virtual graduation
activities have begun and they are getting the yearbook ready.

Ramadan- Have a safe and healthy fast, on behalf of the teachers.

Will students be attending every day? In person students will be attending every day from April 26th to
the end of the school year.
Will the Fifth Grade Graduation be virtual? Yes.

PAC Elections will be held on May 6th at 9:00 AM. (Secretary and Treasurer Position)

PTA Elections will be help at our next meeting, May 12th at 6:30 PM. (All Positions)

Fifth Grade Yearbooks-
Motion for spending $950 for yearbooks made by Mr. Bourgos. Seconded by Sandra Gomez. All in
favor.

There is a $2.99 shipping fee. All problems must be addressed directly with the company.

For Fifth Grade Graduation Photos: This company is not providing cap and gown. If you want a cap
and gown, it has to be purchased by the family. Available through Amazon.com. Hunter Green for
boys and Gold for girls. NOT REQUIRED. Pictures will be available by the end of May.

Bash-the-Trash Assembly with Queens Library- June 10th. Making music with recycled items.

Treasurers Report Report read by Danijela Radivojevic. The starting balance is $6866.58. We wrote
a check to David Ezra Stein for $500.00. Ending balance is $6366.58.
